Thirty-nine British (including General Ross) were killed and 251 wounded at a cost of 24 Americans killed, 139 wounded, and 50 taken prisoner. Marching from Fayetteville, they went through Huntsville; crossed the Tennessee River at Ditto's Landing (mid-October 1813); stopped at Fort Strother; and fought in the battles at Tallushatchee and Talladega (3 November and 9 November 1813).

This book is as complete a guide to the militia units raised in Virginia as records permit. On the day of War June 19, 1812 the great Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh offered his services to Colonel Matthew Elliott, Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, hoping to receive justice from the Americans who had defeated the Shawnees at Tippecanoe under General William Harrison (Nov 8, 1811). American merchant ships profited from this political situation by taking up the goods transport business between the French and Spanish islands in the West Indies and Europe.

Throughout the 19th century, America transformed from a small, developing country into a world power. Jackson responded to the call by mobilizing an army of 1,200 infantry and 800 cavalry and set out for the Creek fort at Talladega, arriving there in the early morning of 9 November. For months, the Canadian commanders had been receiving intelligence from area farmers, and were aware of the American force, its size, and its movements. He connects the developments of the European war with those in the American theater. The most formidable effort by the British in 1814 was the invasion of northern New York, in which Governor Prevost led 11,000 British veterans of the Napoleonic Wars to Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain. Led by a worn two-decker, two sloops of war and a small frigate chivvied the flanks and rear of the columns spread across 5 square miles of the Atlantic, providing assistance and urging the merchantmen to “make more sail.” Meanwhile, sharp eyes in the crosstrees of those escorts scanned the horizon for strange topmasts.
